Wondering whether Apple's new flagship phones will stand the test against breaks and spills? The Squaretrade team has ruined their new mobile devices in the name of science to find out.
In a new study released by the mobile protection plan service, Squaretrade says Apple's iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones are more durable than previous models, as reported by the Associated Press.
Squaretrade says the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 performed best across a variety of tests which measured mobile device performance against eight factors, including grip, size, weight, the quality of front and back panels, and how well the handsets worked after being treated to water damage and being dropped.
The iPhone 6 was able to happily endure 10 seconds underwater, with the device's audio functions only being affected for several minutes afterwards. The iPhone 6 Plus was also able to endure the same dunking.

The iPhone 6 also scored well when dropped from a height of four feet. After hitting the ground, the mobile device suffered only minimal scratches.

However, the iPhone 6 Plus did not perform as admirably; although the handset and screen survived, the phone's casing broke apart and within 30 minutes audio functions vanished. The iPhone 6 Plus also lost additional points as the 5.5-inch handset is at more risk of being dropped than the standard iPhone 6, due to its large but thin frame and the potential difficulty of some users from holding it properly in one hand.
Both mobile devices scored well during a 'slide' test, which measures how likely the phones are to slide and fall off a surface due to a lack of friction on the casing.
Squaretrade used robots to maintain consistency when testing device durability, which is measured on a score of 10 -- with 10 indicating the highest risk of breaking. In total, the iPhone 6 scored a four and snagged the top spot, whereas the iPhone 6 Plus managed to secure a score of five.
